Probitas Rum
This rum is a cool project done between two of the powerhouses in the rum world. Those powerhouses being the Foursquare distillery on Barbados and the Hampden distillery on Jamaica. This rum is a blend of unaged Pot Still rum from Hampden of the OWH Marque, unaged Coffey Column Still rum from Foursquare, and 2-year-old Pot Still rum from Foursquare that is blended together and bottled with no additives. Of fun note, a direct shot at certain brands who believe adding sugar “elevates” their rums is on the back label. (It certainly makes them all taste boring and samey) Let us see how this rum stands up.
ABV: 47%
Nose: Toasted Coconut, Banana, Black Pepper, Vanilla, Lemon Peel
Palate: Medium mouthfeel, Toasted Coconut, Banana, Black Pepper, Lemon Peel, Vanilla, Allspice
Finish: Medium length finish, Lemon Peel, Coriander, Toasted Coconut, Banana, Pineapple
Rating: 6/10
This bottling just recently made it’s way to where I live (Ohio, USA) and I am quite pleased with it. Neat it hits a nice mashup of those flavors I enjoy from Hampden and Foursquare, a bit of over-ripe fruits, spices, vanilla, and toasted coconut sprinkled on top. The 47% proof I just high enough to have flavor but not blow your palate out or challenge you by being really hot. This is also constructed great to stand out in a cocktail (daiquiris with it are quite nice when I am not going nuclear). It stands up to most cocktails where you still want to taste the rum (all of them for me). This is one of those bottles I am going to keep on hand just to show folks how versatile rum can be.
