Review #917; Rum #278: Pere Labat Single Plot Les Mangles

Pere Labat Les Mangles Single Plot

This is another offering from the Pere Labat distillery on Marie-Galante. This rhum, made from fresh crushed sugar cane, comes from a single plot of cane planted at the north end of the Poisson estate in an area that enjoys a specific micro-climate. The cane is hand harvested, kept separate, before a very slow ferment and a distillation on two creole column stills occur before bottling with no additives or dilution.

Rating: 9/10

Simply incredible, the flavors here are almost all savory in nature but they work so well together. Spices and a heavy minerality that reminds me of another category of spirits (agave) makes for an incredibly different drink. This is radically different in taste than the organic which I had a small sip of to compare and this outclasses it in just about every way. This is really something special.
