Review #918; Rum #279: Rum Nation Engenho Novo 8yr 2009

Rum Nation Engenho Novo 8yr 2009

This bottling comes to us from Rum nation an independent bottler based out of Italy who gets interesting things (to me at least). This rum comes to us from Engenho Novo located on the island of Madeira. This rhum is an agricole, it was distilled from fresh pressed cane juice, distilled on a column still, and aged in Madeira casks for 8 years before being bottled at 52%. According to Fat Rum Pirates hydrometer readings, this has a bit of dosage (10g/l), whether that is from additives or as a result of wet madeira casks we do not know.

ABV: 52%

Nose: Cherry Cola, Raspberry, nutmeg, faint star anise, olive oil

Palate: Medium mouthfeel, olive oil, Cherry cola, Raspberry, Star Anise, nutmeg, toasted brown sugar,

Finish: Short finish, cherry, olive oil, raspberry, Star Anise, toasted brown sugar

Rating: 4/10

This is quite a departure from the other Engenho Novo I have tried. As this seems as though the Madeira cask covered up all of the agricole goodness by beating it into submission with cask influence. I am sure that this sounds delightful to some people but this is too much Madiera cask and not enough agricole for me. I know there are fans of this out there, but it misses the mark for me.
