Review #906; Rum #274: El Dorado Overproof (1990’s)

El Dorado Overproof(1990’s)

This is a bottle of rum from Demerara Distillers located in Guayana. This molasses based rum came from the Diamond distillery and we do not know the mix of stills, the added sugar, or if this is unaged or was filtered. So, might as well just see how it tastes.

ABV: 63%

Nose: Toasted Coconut, metallic tinge, Vanilla

Palate: Medium mouthfeel, Caramel, Toasted Coconut, Vanilla, faint industrial

Finish: Medium length finish, Caramel, Toasted Coconut, Vanilla, Faint Industrial

Rating: 5/10

This is an enjoyable higher proof molasses rum. I can see what they were trying to do with this, as its meant to fight in that Jamaican Overproof range of rums. However, while the flavors are enjoyable it does not have that powerful oomph that the holy trinity of Jamaican Overproof can bring. I can see the business sense of doing this when they did, but for me at least it falls short in comparison.
