Review #904/905: Rum #272/273: Lamb’s Navy Rum (Modern vs 1980’s)

Lamb’s Navy Rum (Modern)

This Lamb’s Navy rum is a flagship offering of Navy Rum available across the UK. I can find no data on source so we have to assume Demerara as the main, perhaps with other components. According to the Fat Rum Pirate’s hydrometer readings linked Here, this has no sugar additives. However I think we can assume coloring. Now onto the rum itself.

ABV: 40%

Nose: Caramel, a bit of spicy black pepper, toasted brown sugar,

Palate: Thin mouthfeel, metallic tinge, black tea, toasted brown sugar.

Finish: Short finish, pop of caramel, black tea, metallic tinge.

Rating:3/10

Thin, uninspiring, and the biggest sin of all boring. I know the price + proof points it exists at on the shelf.

Lamb’s Navy Rum (1980’s)

This is a bottle of Lamb’s the same Brand as above, just bottled in the 1980’s. This rum is a blend of Barbados, Jamaica, Guyana, and Trinidad. . That is all I could find on this bottling so let’s get down to trying it.

ABV: 40%

Nose: A bit of tar, green apple, faint pineapple, Vegetal

Palate: Light mouthfeel,Vegetal, Faint Pineapple

Finish: Short finish, Vegetal, Faint Pineapple, Toasted Brown Sugar

Rating: 5/10

Just fine, it has a bit more going on than the modern day lambs, but it existed for the same reason as modern Lamb’s. A cheap rum meant for mixing, though this one is tolerable neat with a bit to explore. The Port Mourant is really distinctive here for me.
