Review #810; Rum #221: Monymusk 9yr (1991) WDI

This rum from the Monymusk distillery comes to us by way of WDI Marketing. This particular rum was bottled for the Japense export market. Aged for 9 years and sold in 2000, let’s see how it turned out.

ABV: 46%

Nose: Soft Tropical fruits, Pineapple, Guava, slight banana, pencil eraser, Toasted Coconut

Palate: Light mouthfeel, Pineapple, Banana, Pencil Eraser, Toasted Coconut, banana

Finish: Short finish, Pineapple, Pencil Eraser, Toasted Coconut, slight oak spice.

Rating: 5/10

Overall, this is just fine. It is a solid Jamaican rum. The esters are low here I would guess, but the tropical fruits and oak interact just well. I would guess continental ageing on this, but the Pencil Eraser notes throws it off a bit from being very good. All in all, I would be happy to drink this though it is not the most complex or challenging dram. Its one to throw in a glass and enjoy on a back porch in a nice night. I don’t have much experience with rum that came out during this time period but this is a fun foray into the 2000’s era.
