This blend, released in 2012, is the first rum blend from Velier, the Italian Independent bottler. It’s a blend of a 3 year rum from one of Cuba’s oldest distilleries, Old Solera rom the Capruano Distillery in Venezuela, and a Caroni distilled in 1994. These rums were aged an additional year in Demerara and Caroni casks before being blended together.
ABV: 42%
Nose: Hydraulic fluid, but not overpowering (hello Caroni), Toasted Brown Sugar, Black Pepper, Star Anise, Chai Latte esque slighty burnt caramel
Palate: Lighter mouthfeel, Toasted Brown Sugar, Hydraulic fluid, black pepper, burnt caramel
Finish: Medium length finish, faint hydraulic fluid, black pepper, toasted brown sugar
Rating:5/10
This is a good rum. Well made, but the proof really hurts here. The flavor are nice but they are out of wack for me, as the Caroni dominates everything. Not that I usually mind I love Caroni, but here the rums can’t come to an agreement on how to present themselves. While an interesting blend overall and rather good, Tiger Shark and Very Old Navy Rum, this is not.
