Stade’s JAWS

Rum / By The Auditor

Review #1305; Rum #610

Here in front of us we have Stade’s JAWS, a release from the West Indies Rum Distillery located on Barbados. This rum was distilled from molasses on the Vulcan pot still and was aged for 6 months before being bottled. It has an ester level between 600 and 700 g/hlap.

West Indies Rum Distillery is owned by Maison Ferrand, who owns the Platnerary brand. I am not a fan of their actions regarding the Jamaica Rum GI and trying to change, or their blocking the Barbados Rum Gi, or their general attitude towards Caribbean rum producers. I highlight this so my biases are out there in the open for everyone to see.

I’m a big fan of high ester rums given my love for all rums Jamaican and other such high ester offerings. But this went for that mark and shot right by it. It’s underaged for sure, it has the hallmark unbalanced sharp oak spice notes that pop in and out along with uneven heat.  The mouthfeel is shockingly thin given the 56% abv.

The folks at Ferrand really can’t help themselves really? They have this incredible to market really shitty rum to people. This JAWS is flat out bad, and the Stades brand was only created to muddy the waters and bring a rum to the Barbados market with sugar added to it to muddy the waters in the GI fight. But regardless of how much Ferrand and their rum sucks, this particular offering is flat out bad and certainly not worth buying. Hell, its not even worth trying. Go buy something from Foursquare, Mount Gay, or Saint Nicholas Abbey and you will be significantly happier with your purchase.
