Rumcast Reserve Mauritius MLM0

Review #1397; Rum #696

So, the hosts over at The Rumcast decided that they would go on a little journey to select a couple of casks of rum. https://www.rumcast.com/rumcast-reserve-journey-1 The whole journey is recounted in that link but through it all they ended up picking this cask of rum from the Main Rum warehouse in Liverpool.

Now, the rum is a fresh pressed cane juice rum from Distillerie de Labourdonnais in Mapou, Mauritius. It was distilled on a single column still and then rested in a stainless steel tank from December 2015 till Februrary 2017. It was shipped to the UK where it rested until September 30th 2019 whne it was filled into an Ex-English malt whisky cask from Cotswolds Distillery that previously held red wine. It aged in Liverpool for 5 years and 5 months before being bottled at cask strength with no additives for The Rumcast, who brought it to the United States to be sold in 375 ml bottles.

This is a great and strange cask of rum the folks over at The Rumcast have select. That malt wine influence comes in very heavy at times, bordering on overpowering. However, the base distillate is able to fight back against it and bring it down to be 2 very different sets of flavors that work for me. Heavy malty breads, a bit of honey, cane juice, fruits, lemon, it’s a very intense kind of rum but one that I am really enjoying. This is certainly a unique cask and one I am glad to have the chance to try.
