Review #968; American Single Malt #29: Single Cask Nation Virginia Distillery Co 5yr Single Cask #666

Single Cask Nation Virginia Distillery Co. 5yr

This American Single Malt comes to us from American independent bottlers Single Cask Nation. This single malt was distilled at matured at the Virginia Distillery Company located in Lovingston Virginia. This Single malt was aged in a Spanish oak butt that once held Oloroso and PX for 5 years before being bottled at cask strength with no chill filtering.

ABV: 58.3%

Nose: Fruits, Raisins, Blackberry, Figs, Nutmeg, Allspice

Palate: Medium mouthfeel, Figs, oak, black berry, bitter black tea, nutmeg

Finish: Short finish, Figs, Oak, bitter black tea, tannins, nutmeg

Rating: 3/10

I expect SCN to pick out good stuff usually, but this has a couple of flaws that bring it down for me. The nose holds the most promise with dark fruits and spices dominating, but then the palate and finish happen. There is just this off bitter note that dominates everything. The ageing vessel seems to have covered up all the base malt flavor for me as I have a hard time finding it. It’s also quite tame in terms of mouthfeel and finish given the cask strength nature of this whisky. Perhaps some folks out there will like this, but it just doesn’t do it for me in comparison to other American Single Malts I’ve tried.
