Review #960; American Single Malt #27: Jack Daniel’s Twice Barreled ASM

Jack Daniel’s Twice Barreled American Single Malt

Hailing from the Jack Daniel’s distillery this is one of the first true giants in the American Whisky distillery scene I can think of that has gone in on an American Single Malt release. This bottle of whisky is distilled from 100% Malted barley. It is then passed through a charcoal mellowing process and aged for at least four years in New Charred Oak. This whisky was then finished for an additional 2 years in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks from the Antonio Paez Lobato Cooperage before being bottled at cask strength.

ABV: 53.35%

Nose: Oak Spice, Raisins, Dark Chocolate, slight banana, Bready, Black Pepper, figs, nutmeg

Palate: Medium mouthfeel, Bready, semi-sweet chocolate, Raisins, Oak Spice, caramelized Bananas, nutmeg, figs

Finish: Medium length finish, oak spice, caramelized bananas, bready, raisins

Rating: 7/10

Color me impressed by this release. I was skeptical of one of the big boys doing American Single Malt given how good the small outfitters are at it, but this is a pretty darn special release. However, that may be due to the Oloroso aging for 2 years as I am a sucker for that kind of cask finish. Anyway, big bold fruits, caramelized bananas, semi-sweet chocolate chips, that classic bready malt flavor. A big dose of black pepper and oak spice hold the sweetness in check along with the malt. This is the one of the best example I’ve had so far of a blend of New Oak and Sherry casks from an American Single Malt producer.
