Review #901; Rum #271: That Boutique-y Rum Co. Engenhos do Norte Madeira 7 Year Old Rum

That Boutique-y Rum Co. Engenhos do Norte Madeira 7yr

This rum comes to us from the Engenhos do Norte distillery located on the island of Madeira (considered part of Portugal). This is an island that is allowed to use the term agricole legally. This rum comes from cane run through a crusher, fermented for 4-5 days, passed through a columnar barbet still, and aged in French oak barrels.

ABV: 48.8%

Nose: Vegetal hits on the nose, Brine, faint raspberry, allspice, toasted graham cracker

Palate: Medium mouthfeel, Brine, faint raspberry, Allspice, Vegetal, faint Raisin

Finish: Medium length finish, Lemon Zest, Brine, olives, allspice, Crisp Vegetalness, a pop of raisin and guava.

Rating: 6/10

Very good. This is a very good rum, nice fruit linger in the background and throughout but that briney cane element is still front and center even after 7 years in a barrel. Nice spices mix in as well as some good mouthfeel for the proof. I am lead to believe this was a very affordable bottling as well so all in all a cool exploration of a place not getting much fanfare.
