Review #872; Rum #251: Savanna 5yr Unshared Cask (For Belgium)

Savanna 5yr Unshared Cask (For Belgium)

This “single” cask is a unique project done for the Belgium market. This bottling here is a blend of two casks, the 1st cask (ex-cognac) holding “Traditional Savanna” for 5 years. The 2nd cask, also ex-cognac, held Savanna HERR for 5 years. They then blended these 2 casks together (proportions unknown) in “American Oak that has never seen any spirits”. They married for a time, reduced to 50%, and bottled with no additives.

ABV: 50%

Nose: Candied Orange Peel, Raisin, Coconut, Bubblegum, Cedar, Char.

Palate: Medium Mouthfeel, Candied Orange Peel, Toasted Coconut, Bubblegum, Peppery, Raisin.

Finish: Medium length finish, licorice, Black Pepper, Bubblegum.

Rating: 6/10

Very good. If I had to guess this just had a touch of HERR added to it (a little goes a long way). But this is a very solid rum, one I would have happily bought at MSRP given the chance. Lots of fruits with a hint of the funkiness from the HERR. Perhaps a marriage cask of what I think is new oak (I used google translate) brought it down just a touch.
