Review #869; American Single Malt #19: Lost Lantern Boulder Spirits 5yr (r/bourbon single cask)

This bottling comes to us by way of American Independent bottler Lost Lantern. This cask of whisky comes from Boulder Spirits in Colorado. This single cask that was chosen had a mashbill of 100% unpeated malt barley, then aged for 5 years in New American Oak in Colorado. This was bottled at cask strength with no additives.

I do not normally add water to my reviews, but single malt I tend to prefer a bit lower than this.

ABV: 70.9%

Nose (no water): Heavy Oak Spice, Cinnamon, Caramel, Tannins.

Nose (water added):Faint Apple, tannins, cinnamon, slight bread, Heavy Black Pepper.

Palate: Medium mouthfeel, Tannins, Pepper, Cinnamon, Slight bread.

Finish: Medium length finish, Tannic, Dry, Black pepper.

Rating: 3/10

I can appreciate the approach many American Single Malt distilleries take in putting their spirit into New Charred Oak, but it tends not to work for me. This is yet again the case here, this spirit has been overtaken by the new charred oak for me and the tannins are overpowering. Not to say this isn’t a quality spirit, this just doesn’t jive well with my tastes. Oak fans, this one is for you.
