Review #844; American Single Malt #15: Westward Cask Strength

This bottling comes to us by way of Westward, an American Single Malt producer located in Portland, Oregon. This bottling is one of their flagships, aged in New American Oak for a non-disclosed amount of time then bottled at cask strength.

ABV: 62.5%

Nose: Graham Cracker, Cinnamon, Pepper, Bready, Light Vanilla, Oak Spice.

Palate: Medium Mouthfeel, Graham Cracker, Cinnamon, Bready, Cocoa, Lemon.

Finish: Medium length finish, Cocoa, Graham Cracker, Cinnamon, Vanilla, Oak Spice.

Rating: 5/10

I like what they are doing; I can sense some of the base distillate flavors here. However, for me it feels like the new charred oak is doing all the lifted and contributes to an over oaked taste for me. Good flavors, but I would prefer to see this in a refill cask of some sort. Still a good showing for a New American Oak cask single malt.
