Review #835; Rum #231: Privateer “When in Rum” Unaged

This unaged overproof rum comes to us by way of a special project at Privateer between Privateer and Kate Perry, the North American Market Manager for La Masion and Velier. In 2020, Kate traveled to Privateer and worked with the team there through the process, working in distilling and making cuts to create this single batch distilled, overproof, unaged molasses rum.

ABV: 63%

Nose: Raspberry, Cumin, Black Pepper, Mint Tea, Faint Mango, Toasted Coconut, Lime Zest, Candied Lemon Peel

Palate: Thick Oily mouthfeel, buttercream mango, Lime Zest, Grapefruit peel, Mint Tea, Candied Lemon Peel.

Finish: Medium length finish, Grapefruit Peel, Lime Zest, Coconut, Mint Leaf, Mango, Candied Lemon Peel, Herbaceous.

Rating: 7/10

Bursting with flavor, this is a very well-crafted rum. The fruits are bursting but are held in check by some savory bits that make for a well-balanced experience. This is a delight to sip neat as it is full of flavor and drinks under its proof in my opinion; however, it also does well in cocktails. A real winner form Privateer and great team work from Kate and Maggie on this collaboration.
