Review #811; American Single Malt #12: McCarthy’s Oregon 3yr “Westmoreland Store Select”

This American Single Malt comes to us by way of Hood River Disitillers, the producers of the first American Single Malt. This whiskey is sourced two row peat-maled barley from Scotland and utilized a local brewer to make the wash. Distilled in a 60-gallon Holstein pot still using a single pass distillation with no chill filtration. This was aged in a 3rd fill, 400L oak barrel for 3 years.

ABV: 56.2%

Nose: Smoked Honey Ham, Black Pepper, aggressive dark chocolate, black tea, Lemon Zest, Hay,

Palate: Thick oily mouthfeel, Smoked Dried Ham, a bit of honey, BBQ sauce, dark chocolate, Black Tea, Lemon Zest, Hay, Green Apple.

Finish: BBQ, Dark Chocolate, Smoke Dried Ham, Black Tea, Black Pepper, green apple.

Rating:7/10

A great whiskey from Hood River. The peat scratches that itch for a peated expression that I want, savory notes all over, aggressive some of them especially that dark chocolate. Black Tea and Hay tempered by some lemon zest and faint green apple. This is a real winner
