This is a 5-year-old single barrel of Rye from Kentucky based distillers Wilderness Trail. The Cincinnati Bourbon Club selected this single barrel. This rye has a mash bill of 56% rye, 33% corn, and 11% malted barley. After distillation, these are aged in 4 char 53 gallon barrels before being bottled at cask strength. Let us see how it is.
(I took these notes blind then was revealed the bottle, so keep that in mind while reading my notes.)
ABV: 61%
Nose: Green Apple, Orange Peel, Tobacco Leaf, Black Pepper, Mint, Vanilla Bean, Lemon Zest
Palate: Medium oily mouthfeel, Green Apple, Orange Peel, Black Pepper, Vanilla Bean, Lemon Zest
Finish: Medium length finish, Green Apple, Orange Peel, Black Pepper, Lemon Zest, Mint
Rating: 6/10
A very good offering, spice, Green Apple, some fruit and black pepper all come together very nicely. Nothing too mind blowing but a very good offering.
Guess: High Rye, Rye, 4-6 Years old, 52-55% abv, Kentucky.
Reveal: Wilderness Trail Rye Pick, 5 Years Old, Cincinnati Bourbon Club Selection
Hmmm, pretty impressive stuff for a craft distillery. Off on the proof by a good amount and missed the barely legal rye mash bill but I do not feel bad about my guess. Solid stuff, I will have to get some for myself in the future.
