Review #767; Rum #199: Clairin Ansyen Vaval 38 month ex-rhum cask “Aficionados / Seelbachs select”

This rum comes to us from the Vaval Clairin producer located in Haiti. This is part of a small segment of Clairin that has been aged in a small Warehouse located in Port-au-Prince. Before this warehouse being built in 2015, Clairin had never been aged before. This particular cask was barreled into an ex-rum cask that previously held rum from Bielle, was aged for 38 months in Haiti, selected by the Aficionados, and bottled at cask strength with no additives. It was bottled in 2020 but due to various ongoing world events took until 2022 to be released.

ABV: 46.8%

Nose: Lemon Grass, Big Minerality, River Rock, Green Bell Peppers, Sea Salt, Clove, slightly over-ripe pear, Guava

Palate: Thick oily mouthfeel, Lemongrass, River Rock, Green Bell pepper, Big Minerality, Sea Salt, Clove, faint cumin, over-ripe guava, mango.

Finish: Medium length finish, Lemongrass, Pear, River Rock, Green Bell Pepper, Minerality, Black Pepper, Cumin, Guava, Mango

Rating: 8/10

Whew, this is an excellent rum. One of the best aged Clairins I have ever tried. It crisp and refreshing, carries a ton of the base distillate flavor through with the vegetalness, yet the barrel plays well with it and adds some of the spices and fruits to the mix. The spices really shine here as the does the Minerality. A home rum selection by the pick team and one I will be looking to get a backup of very soon.
