This is a bottling from Dependent bottler Velier, sourced from the South African rum distillery Mhoba. This fresh pressed cane juice rum was distilled on a pot still before being aged in ex-red wine casks for 4 years. This rum was then bottled at cask strength with no additives. It is clearly some kind of statement on the use of Plastics and Chemicals.

This is another excellent rum from Mhoba. It’s the most cask driven Mhoba I have had which is not a bad thing but may put others off. The red wine is very active in bringing these overt fruity flavors to the Mhoba distillate. Some vegetalness and the classic gluey meaty funk of Mhoba pokes in and out but its overall dominated by heavy fruits and spices. It reminds me of the Mhoba French Cask bottling, just with a different ageing cask to make the flavors different. In a small head to head I preferred the Holmes Cay Mhoba, as I found that though they were the same age, the ex-South African whiskey cask of the Holmes Cay release was not as active as this red wine cask and allowed more of the base distillate to shine through.
