This whisky comes from Bruichladdich located on the famed island of Islay. The Octomore line is known for their high peat levels and this one is in that same vein. Aged for 8 years, with the first six year being in three different wine casks; French Mourvèdre, Austrian Sweet Wines, and French Saturnes before being blended and aged a further two years in Amarone wine casks. Let’s see how it holds up!
ABV: 58.4%
Nose: Smoked Bacon, Plums, Slight Ash, Blackberry Jam, Hay
Palate: Medium oily mouthfeel, Smoked Bacon, Plums, Blackberry Jam, Ash, Hay
Finish: Medium length finish. Rotting Vegetation, Smoked Bacon, Blackberry Jam, Ash, Plums
Rating: 8/10
Full, rich, and peaty, this hits the marks that I tend to like in a peat+wine bottling. The rotting vegetation plays very nicely with the jam and smoked meat notes that dominate the palate. More subtle spices poke out here and there with some pepper and salt dancing with the plums and hay notes. Overall, another excellent addition to the Octomore line.
