Review #718; Bourbon #160: Starlight 4.5yr Cigar Batch r/bourbon Single Barrel

This is a bourbon selected by the team at r/bourbon. This is from Starlight distillery in Indiana; they are kind of the mad scientists of finishes in the American whiskey scene to me. These bottling here was aged for 4.5 years and finished in Brazilian Amburana Barrels before bottling.

ABV: 56.2%

Nose: Toffee, nutmeg, allspice, black pepper, cream, tobacco leaf

Palate: Medium oily mouthfeel, Toffee, wintergreen , brown sugar, black pepper, dark chocolate, tobacco leaf, cinnamon.

Finish: Medium length finish, black pepper, tannins, cinnamon, a bit of bread.

Rating: 4/10

This is one of the most unique things in American bourbon I have tried, up there with Seagrass in terms of weirdness. However, for me, this misses the mark. The cinnamon note is overpowering, there’s a bit of tannic sawdust that creeps in a little, and the overwhelming spices just don’t harmonize well together for me. I recognize this may not be for my tastes, but I am sure some of you out there are really enjoying it.
