This is a single cask of 19-year rum that comes to us by way of the IB Golden Devil. Selected by K&L this Hampden rum is of the <>H Marque which implies an ester level of 900-1000 gr/hLAA. It was aged in the UK before being bottled at cask strength with no additives. Hampden is one of my favorite distilleries so let’s see how this one holds up.
ABV: 59.3%
Nose: Pineapple Rind, creme brulee, over ripe banana, nutmeg, black pepper, star anise, raisins
Palate: Thick oily mouthfeel, Over ripe banana, mango, pineapple rind, black pepper, industrialness, faint star anise, oak spice.
Finish: Medium length finish, burst of star anise, over ripe pineapple rind, banana, industrialness, black pepper, oak spice.
Rating: 7/10
A great Hampden example. The flavors are good here and it hits many of the things I want in an aged Hampden rum. Good level of funk, spice, and other flavors that play well with each other. It does not rise above great for me simply due to the oak. I find I tend to prefer my Hampdens a bit younger than this. A 7 is a good score from me and this is a quality product, but the oak is a bit heavy for my personal taste.
