Review #7; Bourbon #5: Old Forester 1920

Background: This Bourbon comes to us from Old Forester which is owned by Brown Forman. Coming from Kentucky, this release in the Whiskey Row series is well regarded amongst enthusiasts. Let’s see how it performs.

ABV: 57.5%

Nose: Very sweet on the nose. Deep dried fruits, berries of some kind. Caramel and Vanilla and Oak undertones throughout. This is definitely a bourbon. It has just the faintest hint of dark chocolate.

Palate: Starts with the fruity notes at the front and as it moves back through your mouth you are treated with a mix of vanilla, fruit, oak, caramel, and black pepper, with some spice mixed in. A little thick with a hint of oil is the texture. A hint of orange peel as it nears the back.

Finish: The finish starts out a little harsh but then turns into an intense oak and leathery flavor that is simple and gone.

Rating: 6/10

Conclusion: This is a good whiskey. The nose and palate are deep and interesting and make for a good experience. I haven’t had any of the other expressions but a comparison would be good. On its own this is a fine dram that I am glad to have in my cabinet. I would not reach for it daily but I would keep it in my house. The only knock I have for it is the finish has a little bit too much oak in it.
