Review #691; Mezcal #75: Maguey Melate Plum Ciruela

This bottling comes from Mezcalero Jamie Moreles Aquino and was produced at his Yuu Baa, Tierra Caliente Palenque in Villa Hidalgo Yalala, Oaxaca. This spirit contains no agave whatsoever. They produced this by squeezing the plums by hand into clay fermentation pots then they were double distilled on a clay pot still.

I had this blind then was revealed the bottle at the end, so keep that in mind while reading my notes.

ABV: 45%

Nose: Cream Cheese, Olive Oil, Slight chlorine, Minerality

Palate: Medium oily mouthfeel. Strong Olive Oil, Minerality, Brine, Cream Cheese, Pool Water

Finish: Shorter finish. Pop of chlorine, Olive Oil, Minerality, Brine

Rating: 6/10

On the weird side, but overally very good. It reminds me of sitting next to a pool that has just been bodied by a bunch of chlorine but in a good way. Super funky but with good flavors that keep me coming back.

Guess: Mezcal, 46-48% abv, Espadin, Oaxaca, clay pot still.

Reveal: Maguey Melate Plum Ciruela

I would have never guessed this as I don’t quite get the plum flavor at all in it. Still a really cool and really weird product.
