Review #576; Rum #91: Transcontinental Rum Line Fiji 5yr (2014)

This rum comes to us from Fiji based South Pacific distillers. It was fermented from traditional molasses and distilled on a pot still. Aged for 2 years in Fiji before being sent to Europe for an additional 3 years of ageing before being bottled at cask strength with no additives. All of the ageing took place in ex-fiji rum casks.

ABV: 56.9%

Nose: Pungent nose, cocoa, melted plastic, vicks vapor rub, lemon peel

Palate: Medium oily mouthfeel. Heat, cocoa, cough syrup, vicks vabor rub, heavy black pepper. Herbaceous

Finish: Medium length, warm. Vapor rub, burnt plastic, lemon peel, black pepper, herbaceous

Rating: 4/10

I can see why people enjoy this, but it is not for me. So heavy on that burnt plastic, vapor rub, medicinalness that the fruiter aspects are overpowered and this just becomes a muddled, bit of a hot mess for me. I would encourage others to try it to see if you like the profile, but this is not for me. But perhaps this could end up like St. Lucia rum and grow on me.
