Review #556; Rum #77: Foursquare ECS 12yr 2005

This comes to us from the Barbados rum producer foursquare. Distilled in 2005 then bottled in 2017, this was tropically aged for 12 years in ex-bourbon barrels. A blend of pot and column still rums, it was bottled at cask strength with no sugar and no additives.

This is the first of a small number of Foursquare offerings I will be reviewing, so I can get a better understanding of how I feel about their rum.

ABV: 59%

Nose: Vanilla, Black Pepper, toasted brown sugar, slight oak spice,

Palate: Medium oily mouthfeel, Vanilla bean, Black Pepper, chocolate, nutmeg.

Finish: Medium length finish, Vanilla, dark chocolate, black pepper, oak spice, nutmeg.

Rating: 7/10

Went into this not expecting a ton, came away really impressed. Lots of great flavor going on here, good depth to it. Heat is well behaved compared to some other Foursquare offerings I have had. Good spice to balance out the vanilla and dark chocolate notes as well. Is Foursquare over-hyped in the rum world? To me, yes. Do they make really good rum? Also Yes.
