Review #538; Rum #70: Chauffe-Coeur Rum

This rhum comes to us from 2 small producers on Martinique. It meets the requirements to be considered rum agricole, it is made from fresh extracted sugar cane juice, distilled once in a column still, then rested in stainless steel tanks for 3 years. It is then blended and proofed down slowly over time before being bottled. As meeting with the AOC, no sugar, caramel, or other additives have been made to this rum. Sport a comic-sans, inkjet made label with boats of a 2006 Wine Enthusiast Top 50 Best Buy Spirits of 2006, how could I not buy this?

ABV: 54%

Nose: Floralness, slight grassiness, vanilla, dark chocolate, faint salinity,

Palate: Medium oily mouthfeel. Lime zest, vanilla, grassiness, floralness,

Finish: Medium length, oily, warm. Lemon zest, floralness, vanilla bean, slight salinity,

Rating: 6/10

For looking so out of place on the shelf, and rocking a pretty nice $33 dollar price tag this has been a pleasant surprise add to my bar. Lots of floralness, some vanilla, light spice, and very oily this is a nice refreshing drink. It also really shines well in a Ti punch. A very good rum, and one that has opened the door on agricoles for me.
