Review #534; Rum #68: Golden Devil Caroni 22yr (1998) “K&L Select”

This 22 year old Caroni comes to us from K&L. From the closed distiller, this was bottled at cask strength with no additives, distilled from local cane, and aged in ex-bourbon barrels. Let’s see how it holds up.

ABV: 62.1%

Nose: Industrial funk, burnt plastic, diesel fuel, Vanilla, Cream, industrial smoke,

Palate: Thick oily mouthfeel, diesel fuel, vanilla cream, burnt plastic, motor oil, nutmeg.

Finish: Medium length finish, dark chocolate, vanilla cream, motor oil, diesel fuel, industrial smoke, nutmeg.

Rating: 7/10

This is a tasty rum. While the industrial fuel elements may be jarring to some (many) they work really well here. The diesel note is quite nice, and there is a shocking amount of sweetness with a vanilla cream thing underlying all of the heavy industrialness that this oozes. Add in a nice dark chocolate note on the finish accompanied by some nutmeg sprinkled in on the palate and finish and you have a real winner of a rum. This makes this outrun of rum from K&L on this Golden Devil line a 3/5 in the hit range, which I feel is a good return.
