This comes from America rum producer Richland, which is based in Georgia. This is interesting as it is produced using sugar cane syrup in a pot still, so a bit of the agricole style is used. The new make is aged in new charred oak, then that barrel is used to age port, then that used barrel is sent back to finish rum.
ABV: 47.57%
Nose: Honey, Tobacco Leaf, Dark Chocolate, allspice, slightly over ripe fruits.
Palate: Medium mouthfeel. Honey, brown sugar, dark chocolate, red berries, sour funk.
Finish: Medium length finish. Burst of brown sugar, oak spice, red berries, honey.
Rating: 6/10
Overall, this is an interesting take on American rum. The fruit is nice, good oak influence, and the port finish isn’t overpowering (and it doesn’t seem like they left port in the cask. There is an underlying sour funk note I get that makes me want to try this unaged to see how it is. They are officially on my map as an American rum producer and I want to try more of their offerings.
