Review #468; Bourbon #114: New Riff Backsetter Bourbon

This is an experimental release from New Riff. For this one, they took their bottled in bond bourbon, and then they backset some prior distillation from peat smoked malted barley which was mashed with their standard bourbon release. This is 65% corn, 30% rye, 5% malted barley peated backset.

ABV: 50%

Nose: Caramel, vanilla, oak spice, slight pepper. Very faint campfire smoke.

Palate: Medium mouthfeel. Warm. Corn sweetness, caramel, vanilla, very faint campfire smoke, slight green apple.

Finish: Medium length finish. Vanilla, corn sweetness, black pepper, slight chocolate, oak spice. Very faint campfire esque smoke.

Rating: 5/10

This is perfectly fine. It an average bourbon and hits the right notes. I find the peated presence to be very lacking for me. Confession is that I love peat and smoke and the peat is almost non-existent in this, and I have to really search for it in this. I think this is an interesting experiment, but not one I would really want a full bottle of.
