Review #460; Rye #44: High West Double Rye Peated Scotch Finish

This comes from blenders High west. It is their double rye, which is a blend of 2 rye whiskies, a 95% Rye, 5% barley malt from MGP, and an 80% Rye, 20% malted rye from High west. This was selected by a retailer then finished for 10 months in an ex-peated scotch barrel. Let us see how it performed. I took these notes blind and then was revealed the bottle afterwards.

ABV: 50.9%

Nose: Oak Spice, Tannins, Pine, Caramel, Dill, Herbaceous.

Palate: Medium light mouthfeel, Green Apple, Rye Spice, Apricot, Dill Pickle, Herbaceous.

Finish: Medium length, dry, green apple, light vanilla, oak spice, herbaceous slight floral.

Rating: 6/10

Interesting, good rye flavor, good balance and strikes me as a good rye whiskey but does not rise to great levels.

Guess: Rye Whiskey, High Rye in mashbill 60%+ rye, 50-52% abv. Whistlepig 10 CS?

Reveal: High West Double Rye 10 Month Peated Scotch Finish

Well this was different, I am not sure how much influence the peat finish had as I never picked any up, but I am in general a fan of these double rye’s with a finish on them.
