Review #452; Scotch #153: Arran The Cote-Rotie Finish

This Limited Edition release comes to us from Scotch Distiller Arran. This was distilled and aged in refill oak casks then finished in Côte Rôtie wine casks for an unknown amount of time. This bottle has no aged statement, was non-chill filtered and had no color added.

ABV: 50%

Nose: Malt, honey, hay, slight must, slight raisin, allspice, oak structure, toasted sugar.

Palate: Medium Mouthfeel, a bit of heat. Raisins, malt, figs, allspice, raspberry, tart blueberry, lemon zest

Finish: Medium length and dry, strong grape upfront, malty, allspice, figs, pepper

Rating: 6/10

This has some good going for it, and some not so great. It tastes a bit on the young side, with some youthful heat poking out here and there. It also drinks a bit hotter than it’s proof. Under that though is your typical malty, honey esque spirit I get in most Arran. The sweeter fruits from the wine cask comes to play with some nice spices as well. This leans towards the sweeter side of the spectrum, but in a good way. Overall it’s tasty and good, but the youth, and bit of unbalanced heat drag it down from being great. That being said, the price mark on this for a limited edition was great at $50, I would still grab a bottle just to have.
