Review #446; Rum #44: Mhoba High Ester Rum (Batch 2019HE1)

This South African rum is a High Ester, unaged, wild yeast rum that used dunder during its long 22 days fermentation process. This one was harvested in November of 2018 using 30% dunder, and was bottled 16/88. This is from Batch 2019HE1

ABV: 65%

Nose: Briney, light vanilla, cream cheese funk, olive oil, light pineapple, black tea.

Palate: Thick oily mouthfeel. Olive oil, salinity, almost over-ripe pineapple, cream cheese funk, light clay and earth.

Finish: Long, warm. Salinity, vanilla cream cheese funk that lingers, light black pepper, clay, close to over-ripe pineapple. This finish lingers forever with the cream cheese and fruit.

Rating: 8/10

This is an in your face, savory, complex experience that is unique. Tons of cream cheese thick vanilla funk comes at you, tempered by some slightly funky, almost over-ripe pineapple, with some clay reminiscent of clay pot stills. This is one I will need to get a full bottle of for myself, and is firmly between DOK and Savanna HERR in the high ester funky world of rum.
