Review #303; Bourbon #89: Michter’s Barrel Strength Bourbon

This is a release from Michter’s, well known for being a NDP. This is one of their rarer releases, which is only released in Kentucky / at their gift shop. Though the source is not confirmed many think that it comes from Brown Foreman. They barrel this release at 51.5%, which is quite low and interesting to me. Let’s see how well it holds up.

ABV: 54.2 %

Nose: Strong Dark Chocolate, Vanilla Frosting, slight black pepper,

Palate: Medium mouthfeel, heat vanilla frosting, black pepper, slight tobacco leaf, slight cherry. Comes off a bit young.

Finish: medium length, dry and warm. Oak spice, vanilla, slight chocolate, peppery.

Rating: 5/10

It has some of the good qualities of a barrel proofer with the tobacco and oak spice, but is tempered out by the strong chocolate and vanilla flavors for me. I’m not sure on the age on it, but tastes young to me, which brings it down slightly overall. I wanted to like it more, but prefer the 10 year bourbon and the Barrel Strength rye by a wide margin.
