So today on the docket we have something kind of weird, and a throwback. Also to no one’s surprises this is made by MGP. Today we review light whiskey.
Light whiskey was a designation made by the government in the 60s and defined as a whiskey distilled to a higher ABV than 80% and less than 90% and aged in used or uncharred new oak containers. This would create a lightly colored whiskey (perhaps importing less flavor)
This offering comes to us from Cat’s Eye Distillery, who bottles this under their Obtainium Master Collection series. This is sourced from a MGP mashbill, containing 99% corn and 1% malt. Let’s see how this high proof light whiskey holds up.
ABV: 68.6%
Nose: Ethanol punch, corn sweetness, wood spice, musty, slight popcorn.
Palate: Medium, oily mouthfeel. Hot. Ethanol, Corn Sweetness, Vanilla Frosting.
Finish: Medium length, acetone, vanilla frosting, corn, slight woodspice. Allspice, slight caramel.
Rating: 5/10
A weird but fun corn, butterscotch, and slight woodspice bomb. This isn’t something I would want to drink very often, but having it on hand to showcase something weird and unique in the American Whiskey offerings would be welcome (price dependent)
