Review #156; Scotch #52: Laphroaig 21yr (1993)

Background: This bottlings comes to us by way of the Laphroaig distillery located on Islay. This single malt was distilled in 1993, aged for 21 years in First Fill ex-bourbon barrels, then bottled in 2015 with no filtering or coloring added for the friends of Laphroaig.

ABV: 48.4%

Nose: Medicinal iodine, lemon pledge wipes, rotting leaves in the mud on a fall day, campfire smoke, brine, Vanilla hint.

Palate: Campfire Smoke, iodine, pledge wipes, stronger creamy vanilla, oak. Slight citrus zest,

Finish: Long Length, Creamy Vanilla, Orange Citrus, Pledge Wipes, Campfire Smoke, Iodine.

This is excellent. The first fill bourbon casks brings out a rich vanilla that permeates throughout, but is held in check by the Smoke, Peat, and other flavors from the Laphroaig distillate. If I had a bottle of this I can promise you it would not last very long at all.
