Review #142: Scotch #43: Aberlour 12yr 2006 SMWS 54.72

Background: This is a single barrel from the Scotch Malt Whiskey Society. This Aberlour has been aged for 12 years in a refill ex-bourbon barrel before being bottled at cask strength with no color added and was non-chill filtered. I had this blind so keep that in mind while reading my notes.

ABV: 58%

Nose: Honeycomb, pears, light fruits, Vanilla,

Palate: Thick syrupy mouthfeel, Sweet, Honey, vanilla, heat, oak, pepper, black tea.

Finish: Medium length, hot, honey, creamy vanilla, oak.

This is tasty and flavorful. Good honey and vanilla notes in it. The heat can be a little overpowering and the flavors aren’t crazy varied but overall tasty.

Rating: 6/10

Guess: Single Malt, 55-58% abv, ex bourbon barrel, 10-15 years old

Reveal: Aberlour 2006 SMWS 54.72 “Sweet as the cup of Circe”

This is pretty decent offering, but not one that I think I would buy.

4 | Sub-par | Not bad, but better exists.

5 | Good | Good, just fine.

6 | Very Good | A cut above.

7 | Great | Well above average

8 | Excellent | Really quite exceptional.

9 | Incredible | An all time favorite

10 | Perfect | Perfect
