Review #1160; Rum #475
Here we have a rum that I have often ignored but felt the calling to try. The Lone Caner calls its one of the key rums of the world and it was one of the best selling rums at times in its history. But The Lone Caner did a great write up on his site about this rum, with far more detail than this little backstory. But as far as we know this is a 7 year old rum made from molasses or jaggery. Though there is no confirmation made one way or another, this is likely dosed with some additives and color as well.
Distillery: Mohan Meakin
Bottler: Mohan Meakin
Region: India
Still: Column
ABV: 42.8%
Nose: Vanilla, a bit of pepper, heavy molasses, Caramel
Palate: Light mouthfeel, Vanilla, Molasses, Black Pepper, very sweet, a bit of syrup cola.
Finish: Short, Vanilla, Molasses, a bit of black pepper. Sweetness abound
Rating: 3/10
This isn’t for me but I can see the wide appeal of it. It is a pretty easy drink, it has really strong caramel and vanilla notes that are pleasant to sip on it. It feels quite heavy despite the thin mouthfeel and short finish (to me). But, this rum is cheap, has great accessible notes, and likey mixes well with Cola. This isn’t really something I would spring for but it’s easy to see why it has been so popular for so long. But it is far far too sweet for me to enjoy in any capacity.
