Review #1246; Rum #555
Here we have a bottling of rum from Demerara Distillers Diamond Distillery from Guyana. This rum was distilled from molasses on a Copper Pot Still (DHE) and a French Savalle still (LBI). DHE is Damond High Ester and comes in at 1,500 g/hLAA and is blended with the la Bonne Intention (LBI) marque. This blend is aged for 11 years in ex-bourbon casks in Guyana before being bottled at a high strength.
Distillery: Diamond Distillery
Bottler: El Dorado
Region: Guyana
Still: Column & Pot
ABV: 57%
Nose: Burnt Brown Sugar / Caramel, Nutty, Orange Slice, Vanilla Wafer, Dark Chocolate, Coffee, Raspberry, Slight industrial filth
Palate: Thick oily mouthfeel Caramel, Nutty, Orange Peel, Vanilla Wafer, Dark Chocolate, and Coffee
Finish: Long length finish, Nuttiness, Orange Peel, Black Pepper, Vanilla Wafer, Espresso, Dark Chocolate, Raspberry, Slight industrial filth
This is a great rum, and a great example of what well crafted rums from DDL can do. This one is incredibly well balanced showing the classic flavors I expect from DDL bottlings. However, it has a little more oomph and some underlying dirtiness and intensity in flavor I don’t find in many bottling from them outside the really old and expensive stuff.
