Review #1339; Rum #643
Here we have another bottling form Diplomatico, well known for the divisive (and not looked well upon to put it mildly) by me bottling the Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva. This is a bottling of their rum that is 100% from their pot still from molasses. It aged for 8 years in ex-bourbon before being bottled with, allegedly, no additives.
Distillery: Destilerias Unidas S.A. (DUSA)
Bottler: Destilerías Unidas S. A. (DUSA)
Region: Venezuela
Still: Pot
ABV: 47%
Nose: Vanilla, Touch of Raspberry, Star Anise
Palate: Thin mouthfeel, Raspberry, Star Anise, Black Pepper, touch of coffee
Finish: hort finish, pop of Raspberry, Star anise, Black Pepper, Coffee
Rating: 5/10
This is certainly better than the flagship release. The flavors are nice and lean towards a fruity weird industrial thing that I tend to like. It comes off a bit jumbled for me though and despite the high abv it still feels very thin. I think this is a show of great potential at the end of the day. They could make some exceptional rum, but, with how successful they are with their mainline products, what motivation do they have to make things that appeal to our very small, super niche enthusiast market. I will say, though it does not affect my final score, the price on this product is a bit high for what it is.
