Review #1478; Rum #777
This rum a very limited release from Appleton Estate meant to recreate the famous Wray and Nephew 17 year used to make the very first Mai Tais. This rum was distilled from molasses and aged for 17 years in Jamaica at origin before being bottled with no additives. I will note this is a 100% pot still Appleton product which is always exciting. This rum came from 10 ex-bourbon casks which resulted in 1500 bottles total.

First, to get it out of the way, it’s a great tasting rum. Its rich a fruity, quite bright given the age, and delightful to sip on at its proof. Its certainly a bit more interesting than the standard Appleton line, but falls behind most the Hearts releases I have tried. I have no clue how it does in a Mai Tai but it certainly isn’t worth the crazy price they were asking for it.

If you enjoy Hampden-style funk but want a more relaxed, slightly sweeter take that still works in a Mai Tai, this hits a sweet spot without costing a fortune.

The 20% high esters are very dominant on the nose, but I had expected that. After a while, a spicy note comes through. The typical fruity notes from Jamaica are also dominant on the palate, followed by a slightly peppery, spicy note. The 80% South America is most noticeable through a slightly sweet honey note. The finish is slightly astringent and spicy. For me, a very successful blend that is really enjoyable and also has a good PLV. I’ll have to get myself another bottle.Basti8.4Despite the low <>H content (20%), the Hampden sets the pace both on the nose and on the palate. Ester, eucalyptus, tropical fruits, marzipan, glue on the palate, plus a little plastic and fermentation. The young age of the blend is somewhat noticeable, but I still quite like it.Master P8.4As soon as it is poured into the glass, esters and fruit immediately fill the nose. The Jamaica influence remains present on the palate at first and then turns into honey. Alcohol is already present and warms the finish with dry fruits. Really great for the priceStuesch8.3Beautiful nose. Ester notes characterize the picture and the involvement from Jamaica can no longer be denied. A similar impression on the palate, although the rum convinces me even more here. I wouldn’t have thought that not all the parts come from Jamaica. A super sipping rum and considering the price 😱 no brainer Thanks @bananajoe for the sample
