Background: This finished rye comes to us from High West, a producer known for sourcing their ryes. This rye is a blend of 6 year rye from MGP and 16 year rye from Barton that has been finished in Port and French Oak casks before bottling.
ABV: 49.3%
Nose: A crisp spiciness, green apples, a sweet underlying of the wine finish but very faint behind the spices. I could spend all day with this.
Palate: A bit of bite, the rye spice and apple are the forward. Thick rich oily feel throughout the mouth that disappears into a nice mellow sweet from the port finish. This is a fine marriage of the rye and port and this could be sipped on easily all day. Bright sweet apple and rye make this very nice.
Finish: A nice long warm balance of the rye spice with the subdued port finish, this lingers with you for a while and makes you want to come back for more.
Conclusion: This was fantastic. A rich rye whiskey that with the finish and blending makes for me a unique experience. If I had a bottle of this, it would not last long. Rich rye spice and the port finish make this an easy drinker and a very good one. I hate that it is rare and allocated but I wish I could find a bottle.
