Review #1484; Rum #783
This is something I didn’t think I’d see from the US or bottled by Mainland rum. This is an unaged molasses rum from Minnesota that fermented for 2 weeks in open wood vats using S.Pombe yeast and was distilled on a copper column still. Bottled at still strength with no additives for Mainland Rum.
Distillery: N/A
Bottler: Mainland
Region: Minnesota USA
Still: Column
ABV: 62.5%
Nose: Grapefruit, Sharpie Marker, Brine, Minerality, Lime, Floral
Palate: Medium oily mouthfeel, Grapefruit, Sharpie Marker, Brine, Minerality, Lactic, Floral
Finish: Long Finish, Lime Juice, Grapefruit, Sharpie Marker, Lactic
Rating: 7/10
Great rum especially for an unaged US rum, which I can think of a handful of interesting ones off the top of my head. This is certainly among them. Funky lactic notes, fruits, a bit of lime. One of the driest finishes I’ve had, it sucks the moisture right out of your mouth. This is one you will want to sit down and explore quite a bit.
