Ron anejo Arehucas Edition Exclusiva 15 Anos

Review #1265; Rum #570

Arehucas is a rum distillery located in the village of Arcuas on Gran Canaria (Grand Canary Island). This distillery was founded in 1844 as “Fábrica San Pedro”, and originally mainly produced sugar and rum as a result of the agricultural practices. The sugar factory closed in the 1920s but was purchased by an ex-employee to make rum again.

For production methods, the rum is distilled from mostly estate grown cane that that is crushed for fresh pressed cane juice. The fresh pressed cane juice has pitched yeast where it ferments for 36 hours in large stainless steel vats. After fermentation they distill in a two-column setup, Columna destrozadora: steel and Columna concentradora: copper.

Distillate goes into the casks at 65%, 60%, and 40% abv. This distillery exclusive bottling aged for 15  years at location before being bottled with no additives or filtering.

All that out of the way, let us give it a taste.

Distillery: Arehucas

Bottler: Arehucas

Region: Canary Islands

Still: Column

ABV: 40%

Nose: Vanilla, Black Pepper, Allspice

Palate: Medium mouthfeel, Vanilla, Apple, Black Pepper, Allspice

Finish: Medium length finish, Vanilla, Apple, Black Pepper, Allspice

This is a very good quality rum. For the proof it hangs around and punches above with flavor. However, it is pretty barrel forward in terms of flavor profile. It doesn’t seem to have developed some of the more intense and interesting flavors of really old cane juice rums, but its still a very good rum. For a rum from a distillery I have no experience with or really didn’t know existed, this is quite good.
