A.A. Baker Jamaican Rum 1970’s

Here we have a something rather interesting; a friend was a kind enough to grant me a sample of this which, according to the auction sites, is a Jamaican rum from A.A. Baker & Co that was bottled in the 1970’s. To that end, outside a Lone Caner review and some auction sites, that is the extent of the knowledge I could dig up on the bottle. We do not know which distillery or distilleries went into this rum, any marques or ages. We are left to assume all the usual nerdy details we like to pore over. Let us see how this old rum performs.

Nose: Banana, Glue, Vanilla Chair, Black Pepper, Soy Sauce, Green Apple, Brine, Grilled Pineapple Bark

Palate:  Medium mouthfeel, Banana, slight glue, Green Apple, Pineapple, Vanilla Chai, Black Pepper

Finish: Medium length finish, Black Tea, Pineapple, Glue, Banana, Wildflower

Rating: 6/10

Given that we know very little about the production details of this rum, I can at least say it is very good. The flavors are classic aged Jamaican rum with fruits, a hint of glue, and spices to bring it all together. Being that this is rum that was bottled and sold in the 1970s, it is fairly impressive that it retains such character and life even now. This is a Jamaican rum that is good to drink neat, and would be powerful in some delicious rum cocktails. The real fun part of trying old rums like this is to try to get a peek into the rum of, at least in this case, 50 years ago.
