Review #942; American Single Malt #23: Lost Lantern McCarthy’s 6yr

Lost Lantern McCarthy’s 6yr

This single cask of American Single Malt comes to us from American Independent bottlers Lost Lantern. This cask came from the Clear Creek distillery located in Hood River Oregon. This single malt was made from barley from the UK that was malted with peat from Port Ellen. It was fermented for McCarthy’s at Double Mountain Brewery, then distilled at Clear Creek. It was put into a 228 liter 3rd fill Oregon Oak cask with a medium toast and char. After ageing it was bottled at cask strength with no additives.

ABV: 55.6%

Nose: BBQ Smoke, Cardamom, Black Pepper, Bready, Vanilla

Palate: Medium oily mouthfeel, BBQ Smoke, Cardamom, Bready, Vanilla, Black Pepper, Allspice, Apple

Finish: Medium length finish, BBQ Smoke, Apple, Cardamom, Bready, Vanilla, Black Pepper, Allspice

Rating: 7/10

Malty, Fruity, and Spicy. Just a great example of American single malt, the peat is a great backbone, the fruit pops in for some balance, and the spices carry the whole way through. Great job all around.
