Review #876; Rum #253: Foursquare Sovereignty

Foursquare Sovereignty

This rum comes to us from Foursquare, that legendary distillery located in Barbados. This is one of the Exceptional cask series, this one being named Sovereignty as it released the same month as Barbados Independence Day. This rum is a blend of Pot and Column distillate, and that rum aged for 3 years in ex-bourbon before spending another 11 years in ex-Oloroso casks. After 14 years of tropical ageing, this rum was bottled with no chill filtering or additives.

ABV: 62%

Nose: Dark Chocolate, Toasted Coconut, Raisin, Allspice, Figs, Leather, Crème Brulee.

Palate: Thick oily mouthfeel, Dark Chocolate, Figs, Blackberry, Leather, Vanilla Cream, Toasted Coconut, Allspice, Nutmeg.

Rating: 8/10

A wonderful marriage of rum and sherry finish, the finish accentuates the base rum spirit very well for me. Powerful dark rich fruit notes go well with the spices and tropical fruits of the rum, with hints of spices and savory notes popping in and out. This is one of my favorite Foursquare releases I have had, but then again things finished / aged in Oloroso tend to review well for me.
