Review #860: Rum #245: Savanna 15yr (2004) Grand Arome Port Cask Blend

This bottling comes to us by way of Savanna that distillery located on La Reunion Island. This rum, being of the Grand Arome marque was aged for 14 years in 2 separate casks, ex-port and ex-cognac. They were then blended together into once cognac cask and aged for an extra year before being bottled.

ABV: 49.2%

Nose: Over-Ripe fruits, Cement Glue, Raspberry Jam, Currants, Crème Brulee, Grilled Pineapple Bark, Star Anise.

Palate: Medium mouthfeel, Star Anise, Raspberry Jam, Char, Currants, Blackberry, Cement Glue.

Finish: Medium length finish, Star Anise, Cement Glue, Crème Brulee, Currants, Blackberries, Black pepper.

Rating: 7/10

Another great showing from Savanna. This rum is a great balance of tart fruits, acidic, and savory spices that combine with some of the weirder notes (cement glue?) to bring a harmonious rum. The port cask ageing lends itself well to the more traditional cognac cask ageing Savanna does. Offerings like this make me wish Savanna had more of a presence here in the US.
