Review #852; Rum #241: Chairman’s Reserve Master Select 8yr (2011) 50/50 JD1/Coffey

This Chariman’s Reserve Master Selection is a barrel pick done by K&L Wines out in California. This St. Lucia Distillers rum was aged for 8 years in ex-bourbon before being bottled for K&L with no chill filtering or additives. This is a blend of 50% John Dore 1 pot still distillate and 50% Coffey Column still distillate that was blended into casks then aged.

ABV: 54%

Nose: Licorice, Toasted Coconut, Raspberry, Cinnamon, Menthol.

Palate: Medium mouthfeel, Licorice, Toasted Coconut, Menthol, Cinnamon, Black Pepper, Allspice.

Finish: Medium length finish, Allspice, Cinnamon, Menthol, Black Pepper, Raspberry.

Rating: 6/10

Very good. Like the flavors, the Menthol notes are weird but a fun addition that don’t overpower too much. Its good as I said, but having had quite a few of these Chairman’s selects it doesn’t quite rise to the depth of flavor or interest of some others. However, these are still some of the best values in rum in the U.S. right now, and I would blind buy just about any Chairman’s select.
